Baldur's Gate 3 runs on any Mac that supports Metal 2.2, from macOS 10.15.6 onwards. It's a native app for both Intel and Apple Silicon machines, so you're not running a translated version.

Combat is your explosive playground

  • Turn-based tactical play. Combat pauses the world and lets you position each party member, line up spells, and use the environment. Barrels explode, chandeliers drop, and a shove can end a fight before it starts.
  • Character tinkering. You create a custom character before the campaign begins, then recruit three more companions along the way. Each one has their own quests and opinions, and they'll argue with your choices.
  • Playing across devices. Cross-saves let you move a campaign between supported platforms without losing progress.

Four-person party locks in tough choices

  • The party is capped at four characters, so you're choosing who to bring and who to leave at camp.
  • You can pause exploration anytime, but conversations and dice rolls keep the story moving. It's a game that reacts to failure as much as success.
  • The macOS version needs a 64-bit processor and Metal 2.2 features. An eGPU is supported if you want more headroom.

Scouting ahead with a stealthy vampire

You load a save from the night before. The party is camped near a ruined temple, low on camp supplies. You send Astarion ahead, crouched. His stealth check passes — he spots a patrolling gnoll and pings it on the map. You switch to Shadowheart and cast Pass Without Trace on the group. Everyone creeps past. No initiative rolls.

Further in, a trapped sarcophagus. You fail the perception check, so you switch to turn‑based mode manually. Gale casts Mage Hand and you float the lid open from a safe distance. Poison gas vents out, harmless. Inside: a cursed amulet and a scroll you haven't seen before.

Back at camp, you talk to Lae'zel. She's furious about a deal you made earlier. A persuasion roll — you need a 15, you roll a 16. The tension breaks. She stays, and you get a new lead on a githyanki crèche to the west. You save, quit, and the cross‑save syncs the campaign for later.

From a dungeon master's desk

Tabletop Dungeon Masters often come to Baldur's Gate 3 to see how Larian translates 5th edition rules into a video game. One DM we spoke to spent her first three hours not progressing the main quest, but testing how the game handles light, cover, and object interaction. She stacked crates to gain high ground in a goblin fight, then dipped a crossbow bolt in a fire surface for extra damage. The game let both work, exactly as the rules suggest.

She now uses the combat log during her home sessions. Screenshots of initiative rolls and damage breakdowns help new players understand action economy faster than a whiteboard. She also recreates her players' most chaotic decisions in the character creator — a half‑orc bard with no charisma, a forest gnome barbarian — just to see if the dialogue options survive the build. They usually do, and often with lines she borrows for her own campaign notes.

Questions I get

Yes, cross-play is available with supported platforms, and cross-saves let you move your campaign between them.
