Working in Sanatorium - A Mental Asylum Simulator, step 5

If you've played Papers, Please, you'll recognise the tension in Sanatorium. This time, your desk is in a 1920s asylum, and every patient file is a card-based puzzle testing your judgement.

Setting up the asylum

Castle Woods is your workplace and its story unfolds over four chapters. With more than 100 cards, each case pushes you to choose between strict protocols and risky experimental treatments.

Diagnosing the cards

Symptoms, tests, and outdated therapies form the core loop. Your decisions branch the narrative and lock in one of several endings.

Your first few shifts

Don't rush to fill every bed on day one. Reading each patient file slowly in the first hour teaches you how symptoms link to the card options later. Miss a detail now and a quiet case can spiral two chapters down the line.

Let the music do its job. The soundtrack shifts subtly when a patient is hiding something, but the cue is easy to ignore if you have the volume low or a podcast running behind it.

Little buttons that save you time

Right‑click a card on the table to see its full backstory without dragging it back to the file. The tutorial mentions it once, then never again. In the diagnosis phase, holding Shift while selecting symptoms lets you compare two cards side by side instead of flipping between them. That alone cuts a few minutes off every chapter.

If you're hunting all endings, the chapter select screen appears only after the credits roll the first time — there's no main menu hint. Bookmark your favourite fork by jotting down the date stamp from the save, because the auto‑save overwrites aggressively.

Flavour text at slow speed

Swap the default text speed to slow in the accessibility panel. The standard setting rushes past flavour text that often signals a branch point. While you're there, turn off the screen shake toggle unless you enjoy the electroshock therapy jolts rattling the whole frame.

If your Mac has a notch, switch the display mode to windowed before the first major cutscene — fullscreen clips the top dialogue bar on a few 14‑inch and 16‑inch screens. The developer hasn't patched it yet in 1.06f, so windowed is the cleaner ride.

Skip the shock therapy shakes

A sanatorium - a mental asylum simulator torrent for macOS search sometimes surfaces old builds. Stick with the 1.06f disk image here; earlier versions missed the Korean and Chinese localisations and had a reproducible crash in chapter three's quarantine wing.

The game supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs. Controls are straightforward point-and-click, and the hand-drawn art stays crisp on any recent display.
