Download EZdrummer for macOS
Bandmate, tap the grid, and grid edit. Those are the tools you reach for once you know the sounds are solid. And in EZdrummer, the sounds start solid—seven kits, three distinct rooms, a spread of percussion, all sitting in mix-ready presets you don't have to second-guess. The deeper craft lives in what you do with the MIDI.
The groove library isn't a bolt-on. It's the backbone. You browse by feel or style, drag a pattern to the song track, and then pull it apart. Tap the grid lets you finger-drum a part and have it quantise to the nearest sensible hit; grid edit gives you a clean piano-roll view to nudge velocities and slide notes off the grid just enough. A drummer would call it feel. You call it your chorus not sounding like a robot.
Building drums by feel and swapping rooms fast
- Songwriters who build drum tracks by feel, not by programming every hit from scratch
- Quick A/B testing of room sounds—Main Room, Bright Room, Tight Room—without loading new kits
- Pulling a groove, tweaking the hi-hat pattern in grid edit, and printing a version that breathes
- Layering percussion from the same interface without leaving the song track flow
Expansion packs need version 3.1.2 or newer
- Version 3.1.2 is required for EZX expansion packs released from Q4 2025 onward
- Hi-hat pedal CC and other controller data could drop out during song-track recording before this update
- Toggling Solo or Mute in the mixer previously risked clearing the opposite recall state
Songwriters who track before the idea fades
EZdrummer wasn't built for drum technicians. It was built for people who hear a song in their head and need the drums to exist before the idea fades. A few groups get there quicker than others.
Songwriters who track at home. You already have a guitar line and a vocal scratch. Bandmate listens to your rough mix and hands back a groove that fits the pocket. You tweak the snare articulation, drag a fill from the library, and you're tracking bass inside ten minutes. No scrolling through one-shots at 2 a.m.
Producers stitching together demos. The three room sounds mean you can switch a dry indie kit into something cavernous without touching a reverb plugin. Mix-ready presets are genuinely mix-ready—you can hand a bounce to a collaborator and not apologise for the drum sound.
MIDI novices with rhythm sense. Tap2Find turns a tapped rhythm into a search query across the groove library. You don't need to know that a verse groove is called "16th-note hi-hat with ghost notes." You just tap it, and the software finds it.
A producer's Tuesday night
Maya runs a small project studio. A client sends her a rough acoustic track—just guitar and a whispered vocal—and asks for a full arrangement by Thursday. She drags the bounced WAV into Bandmate. EZdrummer suggests a half-time groove with a tight snare and open hat on the chorus.
She pulls the groove onto the song track, splits it at the bridge, and swaps the second half for a sidestick pattern from the library. Grid edit lets her nudge the kick drum ahead of the beat by a few ticks—barely visible on the grid, but the whole track breathes differently. She adds a shaker from the percussion tab and prints a stereo drum stem. The client texts back: "This sounds like a record." Maya closes the laptop at 10:30 instead of midnight.
Controller data dropping out during recording
Things that trip people up, and what to do about them.
Hi-hat pedal data vanishing. Before version 3.1.2, controller data on the song track could drop out during recording. If you're still seeing that behaviour, check you're on the latest build. The fix was specific to song-track CC handling.
Solo and Mute recall getting crossed. An older bug meant that toggling Solo in the mixer could wipe the Mute state you had set, and vice versa. Reproduced most often when flipping between kit pieces quickly. Again, resolved in 3.1.2.
EZX packs that won't load. Expansion packs released from Q4 2025 onward need version 3.1.2 or later. If a brand-new EZX shows up greyed out or throws a compatibility warning, the update is the first thing to reach for.
Tap2Find returning odd results. Tap cleanly and close to the grid. If you tap a triplet feel while the search is quantised to straight sixteenths, the results drift. Use the quantise strength setting inside Tap2Find to match your input.
Looping one groove instead of using Song Creator
Most of these come from treating EZdrummer like a sample player rather than a songwriting tool.
Dragging a single groove and looping it for the whole track. The Song Creator exists for exactly that reason. Feed it a basic idea and let it generate variations—verse, chorus, bridge, fill. A looped four-bar pattern fatigues the ear fast.
Ignoring Edit Play Style. The same base groove can sound completely different when you dial the complexity up or down, or shift the emphasis to a different kit piece. It's sometimes faster than finding a new groove.
Skipping the percussion tab. A tambourine on the chorus or a shaker under the verse adds motion that a kick-snare-hat pattern alone can't carry. The percussion sits in the same mixer, so levels stay tidy.
Not starring grooves as you browse. The library is deep. If you hear four or five patterns that feel close to what you want, star them. You can filter by starred later and audition the shortlist without retracing your steps.
Over-quantising in grid edit. Pulling every hit dead onto the grid makes the track sterile. Let ghost notes fall a fraction late and keep velocity variation intact. A drum track that sounds "right" usually has a little human drift.
- Standalone and project icons updated to the macOS Tahoe style
- Internal improvements added for Infinity Grid EZX
- Fixed song-track CC recording drops and mixer Solo/Mute recall clearing
- macOS 10.15 or later
- Intel or Apple Silicon Mac
Questions I get
No. You need version 3.1.2 or later for support of EZX expansion packs released from Q4 2025 onward.
Yes. It fixed a problem where hi-hat pedal CC and other controller data could fail during song-track recording, and corrected a mixer bug where toggling Solo or Mute cleared the opposite recall state.
Yes. It supports both Intel and Apple Silicon Macs running macOS 10.15 or later.
