Download Arturia Tape MELLO-FI for macOS
Producers and beatmakers reach for Tape MELLO-FI when a digital track feels too clean. It sits well on drum buses, synth leads, vocal doubles and anywhere you want instant tape-aged warmth without a chain of five plugins.
Glue your drum bus with dusty tape
- Drum bus: dulls harsh transients and glues hats, snares and kicks into one dusty layer.
- Keys and pads: adds the wobbly, chill atmosphere of an old Mellotron to clean digital chords.
- Vocal doubles: pushes backing takes back in the mix with a soft, aged texture.
- Full mix: a light touch can soften a sterile master without clouding the low end.
How it behaves
Arturia built this as a lo-fi effect plugin derived from Mellotron V, so the character is baked in rather than assembled from separate saturation, wobble and noise modules. The result is instantly audible: drop it on a source, drag a control or two, and the track sounds a decade older. It is not a virtual instrument and not a standalone app, so it always lives inside your DAW as a processing tool for audio sources.
Dirtying a clean synth lead in 30 seconds
Grab a bright digital pluck or lead that feels too present. Load Tape MELLO-FI on the channel, set the input gain so the meter hovers around halfway, and push the Drive knob until you hear gentle breakup. Pull back the Tone control to roll off the top end, then nudge the Wow & Flutter up to about 10 o'clock. The sound shifts from clean to cassette-worn, and it still cuts through a busy mix.
For more movement, route a slow LFO to the Flutter Rate in your DAW, or automate the Noise slider so it swells between phrases. Bounce the result to audio and chop the tail for a crunchy one-shot you can reuse across the project.
First-day habits worth building
- Gain-stage early. The Drive circuit saturates quickly. Start with low input, then push harder once you hear how it reacts on your source.
- Check in mono. The wobble can smear stereo width in ways that collapse badly on small speakers. Flick between stereo and mono while dialling Wow & Flutter.
- Try it pre-EQ. Placing MELLO-FI before a surgical cut often sounds more natural than chasing harshness after the fact — the plugin softens the transients that EQ would otherwise fight.
- Blend with dry. If your DAW lacks a wet/dry knob, duplicate the track, process one copy and mix the faders. A little clarity underneath keeps the lo-fi texture from turning muddy.
- Save two presets. Make one subtle setting for bus work and one wrecked setting for creative drops. Day one presets keep you moving when inspiration hits.
- Version 1.4.1.6566 is listed on Arturia's downloads and resources pages.
- macOS 11.0+ support confirmed in the resources page.
